This two volume set leaves the 21st century “purpose driven churches” in the dust. They do not call this God glorifying era the, “Great Awakening” for nothing. Although, the question is "awakened to what?"
Was the church and culture during George Whitefield’s time all that much different from today? We may have less superstition among us, thanks to better scientific awareness, (although, our Pagan neighbors may have something to say about that). However, the “self-centeredness” is much stronger today with its faithless cries of “I want it now,” the cry of a decadent people. Both non-religious and religious humanism remains the same in every area of life. The nations “rage” against the Crown Rights of the Lord Jesus Christ yet God declares they are but a “drop in the bucket” to Him.
There is nothing perfect about any era of church history. God’s Kingdom advances like the interacting “yeast” used for bread, by making its dough slowly rise to tasty and satisfying perfection.
